JERSEY CITY, NJ - February 12, 2020— Mothers, grandmothers, and mother figures of all stripes are often the unsung heroes of everyday—and extraterrestrial—life, rarely portrayed as the heroines of their own stories. But no more.
Author Mary Fan announced today that she launched a Kickstarter campaign for BAD ASS MOMS, an anthology of short stories spanning numerous genres, including sci-fi, contemporary, historical, and fantasy, all portraying tales about, well, bad ass moms, to be published in partnership with Crazy 8 Press.
Edited by Fan, the collection features tales from 20+ writers, from industry veterans to a debut author. The campaign, which will end on March 11, 2020 at 12PM EDT, is aiming to raise $4,500 to cover publishing costs. For those disinclined to use Kickstarter, a direct PayPal alternative is available via Fan’s website.
“Since moms and badassery come in infinite forms, I gave the contributing authors only one criterion: that their story be about a bad ass mother or mother figure, whatever that means to them,” said Fan, who has published several books including Artificial Absolutes (Red Adept Publishing, 2013), Starswept (Snowy Wings Publishing, 2017), and Stronger Than a Bronze Dragon (Page Street Publishing, 2019). Fan is also the co-editor, with Paige Daniels, of the Brave New Girls anthology series.
“Mothers are most often dead or absent in fiction,” Fan noted, “and if they are present, they’re often relegated to minor supporting roles. In addition, mother figures are not often present in fiction the way father figures are. The goal of the anthology is to push back against that trope and present a collection of stories that centers on heroines who are also mothers or mother figures.”
In BAD ASS MOMS, “We’ve got moms across the age and experience spectrum, from grandmas to new moms,” said Fan. “We've got warrior moms and moms who are bad ass in a quieter way. We’ve got biological moms, adoptive moms, and mom figures.”
To bring this anthology to life, Fan has partnered with Crazy 8 Press, an independent publishing collective. The full list of authors is as follows: Danielle Ackley-McPhail, Derek Tyler Attico, T. Eric Bakutis, Russ Colchamiro, Paige Daniels, Kathleen O'Shea David, Peter David, Michael Jan Friedman, Robert Greenberger, Glenn Hauman, Heather E. Hutsell, Kris Katzen, Paul Kupperberg, Karissa Laurel, Khaalidah Muhammad-Ali, TJ Perkins, Aaron Rosenberg, Jenifer Purcell Rosenberg, Joanna Schnurman, Hildy Silverman, and Denise Sutton. If the campaign meets its first stretch goal ($5,000), Keith R.A. DeCandido will also contribute a story.
In exchange for backing the project, backers can gain access to a variety of rewards, including an autographed paperback copy of BAD ASS MOMS (for $35), their name in the acknowledgements (for $55), their name mentioned in one of the stories (for $60), or a character named after them (for $100).
