In the "Flynn Nightsider" series, the Triumvirate of North America classifies its people according to the following castes:
Norm: Humans born without magical abilities (lowest caste).
Defender: A privileged class of Norms who help the Sentinel fight supernatural threats (second lowest caste).
Enchanter: Humans born with magical abilities (second highest caste).
Sentinel: An elite class of Enchanters and guardians of the Triumvirate (highest caste).
Within the Academy of Supernatural Defense, which Flynn attends, the students are divided into the categories:
Scholars: Children of Enchanters, who are taught how to wield their magic and how to use it to fight monsters.
Cadets: Defenders-in-training, mostly the children of current Defenders. They are barred from the Scholars' magic classes.
Secondstringers: Students sent to the Academy by the state-run orphanage on a work-study program. They are barred from both the Scholars' magic classes and the Cadets' monster-fighting classes.
Enchanters who break away from the Triumvirate are known as Rogues and treated as criminals.

Flynn Nightsider
Age: 16 Classification: Secondstringer Flynn was raised by his mother, Vivian Nightsider, and grew up never knowing who his father was. Orphaned at the age of ten, Flynn was sent to the state-run orphanage in the Triumvirate's capital. At the age of twelve, he and the other orphans in his age group were sent to the Academy of Supernatural Defense on a work-study program. Forbidden from taking the monster-fighting or magic classes the school is known for, Flynn resents the system and refuses to buy into the state's propaganda.
One day, Flynn uncovers a clue in the mysterious death of his mother. Chasing the truth leads him inadvertently being swept into an underground revolution known as the Rising. |
Aurelia "the Firedragon" Sun
Age: 16 in Flynn Nightsider and the Edge of Evil, 14 in The Firedragon: A Flynn Nightsider Tale Classification: Cadet Raised to be a champion monster fighter, Aurelia was the star pupil at the Academy of Supernatural Defense until she got fed up with the Triumvirate's state-sanctioned discrimination. She befriends Flynn and teaches him some of her combat skills in an effort to prepare him for the dangerous world he must face.
Braxton "Brax" Aiza
Age: 16 Classification: Secondstringer Brax is Flynn's best friend and partner in crime. Flynn often finds himself envious of Brax's cool and carefree demeanor, which allows him to talk his way out of trouble. Kylie Larue
Age: 16 Classification: Secondstringer Brax's girlfriend and Flynn's classmate. Kylie was sent to the Academy's work-study program for orphans after her parents were killed in a monster attack. Although she appears fragile and angelic, she dreams of becoming a Defender so she can prevent others from suffering as she did. Connor Salvator

Although Principal Everett's job is to run a school meant to teach Norms and Enchanters to work together in defense of the nation, he makes no effort to hide his disdain for the non-magical. His father was the first White Triumvir, one of the founders of the Triumvirate.
